Return Management Platforms: 2026 Pricing Comparison
Pricing and product pages checked: August 17, 2026
TL;DR: Six currently verifiable Shopify return-management options use very different pricing models. Forthroute has no software subscription or monthly return limit, but optional Forthroute-brokered labels cost carrier rate plus a 1% handling markup rounded up to the next $0.10. Loop lists Checkout+ as free software plus return shipping, Essential at $155/month, and Advanced at $340/month. AfterShip starts at $16/month, Return Prime has a free-to-install tier, ReturnGO starts at $147/month, and Happy Returns uses quote-based pricing.

This comparison focuses on facts a merchant can verify before booking a demo or installing an app: public price, included return volume, workflow controls, label model, and platform fit. Public price is not the same as total cost. Label charges, overage rates, add-ons, carrier contracts, and retained-value incentives can change the economic result.
Return platform comparison at a glance
| Platform | Public starting price | Public allowance or billing grain | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forthroute | No software subscription | No monthly return limit; optional brokered labels billed separately | Shopify-only workflow with merchant-issued refunds |
| Loop | Checkout+: free software plus return shipping | Essential $155/month; Advanced $340/month; enterprise quote | Exchange and workflow features vary by plan |
| AfterShip Returns | Essentials $16/month | 240 returns/year; $0.50 per extra return | Annual return allowance with published overages |
| Return Prime | Free to install | 5 requests included; $0.49 per additional request | Low published entry point with request-based tiers |
| ReturnGO | Premium $147/month | 110 returns/month; $1.25 per extra return | Published Premium and Pro volume tiers |
| Happy Returns | Contact vendor | No current public software price on the source reviewed | Physical, box-free and label-free Return Bar network |
Reading the table: “Free software,” “free to install,” and a paid monthly plan are not equivalent billing units. Compare your expected request volume and shipping arrangement before comparing headline prices.
How we compared these platforms
We included products with a current official product, pricing, or Shopify App Store source that exposed enough information to evaluate the offer. Prices below are the public figures visible on August 17, 2026; vendors can change them after that date.
- Price: software fee, included volume, and published overage where available.
- Return intake: whether the product describes a branded or self-service portal.
- Resolution controls: refunds, exchanges, store credit, and who triggers the refund.
- Logistics: labels, carrier model, tracking, and whether physical drop-off is central to the offer.
- Platform fit: whether the reviewed offer is specifically available to Shopify merchants.
This is a feature-and-pricing comparison, not an outcome ranking. We found no page-attributed installation, conversion, revenue, or merchant-outcome dataset that would support declaring one universal winner.
1. Forthroute: no software subscription
Forthroute pricing separates software access from optional shipping-label costs. The software has no subscription and no monthly return limit. If a merchant uses Forthroute-brokered prepaid labels, each label is billed through Shopify at carrier cost plus a 1% handling markup, rounded up to the next $0.10. A merchant can instead connect its own carrier account.
Forthroute is a Shopify returns-management app with a branded customer portal, rule-based approval, exchanges, store credit, printerless QR labels through EasyPost, and return-leg tracking. Refund remains the default resolution in the portal. Forthroute supports exchanges and incentives, but it is not an exchange-first product.
The refund boundary matters: approval rules can set an eligible request to approved, but Forthroute does not issue the refund automatically. The merchant initiates the refund. Forthroute also does not supply a warehouse drop-off network or physical return centers.
Evaluate Forthroute when: you run Shopify, want to avoid a software subscription or monthly return cap, and are comfortable with merchant-controlled refunds. Check the Forthroute Shopify listing before installing.
2. Loop: multiple software and workflow tiers
Loop's official pricing page listed three public plan levels when checked. Checkout+ was described as free software plus return shipping and included returns software, domestic labels in the United States and Canada, Return Bars, and advanced features. Because return shipping remains part of the model, the word “free” should not be read as zero total return cost.
Essential was listed at $155/month. Its published features included unlimited destinations, automated return policies, carrier-rate shopping, and workflows. Advanced was listed at $340/month and added Shop Now, Instant Exchange, Bonus Credit, and fraud-prevention features. Enterprise pricing required contact with Loop.
Evaluate Loop when: you want to compare plan-gated exchange, workflow, and fraud controls and can model the software and return-shipping components together. Confirm which features are included in your proposed contract rather than assuming every named feature is in the entry plan.
3. AfterShip Returns: annual return allowances
AfterShip's official returns pricing listed Essentials at $16/month for 240 returns per year, with $0.50 for each extra return. The published Essentials feature set included a branded returns page, refunds and exchanges, return labels, eligibility and routing rules, automated request approval, analytics, store credit, tracking, notifications, and three carrier connections.
Premium was listed at $99/month for 1,200 returns per year, with a $1 charge per extra return. The pricing page added advanced workflows, AI-assisted exchanges, fraud-prevention controls, advanced analytics, integrations, webhooks and API access, point-of-sale support, and five carrier connections. Enterprise pricing was custom.
AfterShip's pricing FAQ said merchants use their own carrier accounts and identified 18 supported carriers when checked. That is distinct from the number of carriers a plan lets a merchant connect.
Evaluate AfterShip when: annual return allowances and published overage rates make forecasting useful, and you need to compare workflow depth and integrations across plans.
4. Return Prime: request-based entry tiers
The Return Prime Shopify App Store listing showed a free-to-install tier with five return requests included and $0.49 per additional request. Grow was $19.99/month for 60 requests, with $0.49 per extra request and a 15-day trial.
The same listing showed Thrive AI at $79.99/month for 180 requests, with $0.79 per extra request, and Scale at $149.99/month for 450 or more requests, with $0.49 per extra request. Both paid tiers displayed a 15-day trial. The listing described a return portal, exchanges, approval workflows, and return labels; the exact feature allocation depends on tier.
Evaluate Return Prime when: your first comparison is a low-volume, request-priced Shopify plan. Model what happens after the included allowance because the additional-request price differs between tiers.
5. ReturnGO: published Premium and Pro plans
ReturnGO's official pricing page listed Premium at $147/month and Pro at $297/month, with Enterprise available by quote. Its Shopify App Store listing provided the volume grain: Premium included 110 returns per month with a $1.25 overage, while Pro included 300 returns per month with a $0.90 overage. Both displayed a 14-day trial.
The public Premium feature list included a return portal, variant and product exchanges, refunds, gift cards, store credit, request-approval automation, Shop Now, and shipping integrations. Pro added capabilities such as advanced automation, item validation, packing slips, unlimited languages, ERP connections, automatic completion rules, and API or webhook access.
Evaluate ReturnGO when: you can place expected monthly return volume into a published Premium or Pro allowance and need to compare the additional Pro controls with the price difference.
6. Happy Returns: a physical Return Bar model
Happy Returns is structurally different from a software-only returns portal. A current UPS description of Happy Returns says shoppers can bring eligible returns to nearly 8,000 Return Bar locations in the United States without a box or printed label. UPS announced its acquisition of Happy Returns in 2023.
We did not find a current public price on the primary source reviewed, so this comparison records the price as “contact vendor” rather than carrying forward an old third-party figure.
Evaluate Happy Returns when: a physical, box-free and label-free drop-off network is central to your customer experience. Ask for the exact software, processing, geographic, and shipping terms in the quote.
Why Return Genie and ReturnMagic are not ranked here
The previous version of this page presented Return Genie and ReturnMagic as two of its five leading choices. We could not verify a current official pricing or active Shopify App Store source for either product during this refresh. They are therefore not ranked as current recommendations. This is an evidence boundary, not a claim that no similarly named product or historical documentation exists.
How to choose without being misled by the starting price
- Use one volume estimate. Put the same expected monthly and annual return count into every plan.
- Separate software from shipping. Record subscription, overage, label, carrier, processing, and add-on costs in different columns.
- Map your approval and refund owner. Decide what may be automatically approved and what must remain a merchant action.
- List required resolutions. Confirm refunds, exchanges, store credit, gift cards, and any exchange incentive you actually intend to use.
- Check the logistics model. A carrier-label workflow and a physical drop-off network solve different problems.
- Verify the final quote. Public pages are a screening tool. Your signed plan, allowance, and add-ons determine the actual contract.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest return-management platform?
There is no defensible answer from starting price alone. Forthroute has no software subscription or monthly return limit, but optional brokered labels have a carrier charge plus markup. Loop's Checkout+ combines free software with return shipping. Return Prime starts free to install but includes five requests before overage. Compare all costs at your expected volume.
Which platform has the lowest published paid plan?
Among the paid starting plans in this six-product set, AfterShip Essentials was $16/month and Return Prime Grow was $19.99/month when checked. Their allowances and feature sets differ, so neither figure proves a lower total cost.
Does Forthroute refund customers automatically?
No. Forthroute approval rules can approve eligible return requests, but refunds are merchant-issued. Approval and refund execution are separate steps.
Which option includes physical drop-off locations?
Happy Returns is the option in this comparison centered on a physical Return Bar network. Forthroute does not operate warehouses, return centers, or a physical drop-off network.
How current are these prices?
The linked official sources were checked on August 17, 2026. Pricing can change, so confirm the vendor page and final quote before buying.
Bottom line
Start with the billing grain, not the largest feature list. Forthroute removes the software subscription while keeping refunds under merchant control. AfterShip and Return Prime expose lower paid entry points with volume allowances. Loop and ReturnGO publish higher-priced workflow tiers. Happy Returns adds a physical network that is not directly comparable to a portal-only model. Shortlist the model that matches your workflow, then price it at your actual volume.
