Product comparison checked August 17, 2026; billing terms and worked cost example checked September 5, 2026; ClickPost checked October 2, 2026 and rechecked October 8, 2026; Happy Returns network description checked October 8, 2026

TL;DR: Return-management platform pricing combines software fees, return-volume allowances and separate shipping costs. AfterShip Essentials is $19/month or $192/year ($16/month equivalent). ClickPost requires a returns-specific quote. Forthroute has no software subscription or monthly return limit, but optional Forthroute-brokered labels cost carrier rate plus a 1% handling markup rounded up to the next $0.10. Happy Returns uses quote-based pricing for its physical Return Bar model. Loop lists Checkout+ as free software plus return shipping, Essential at $155/month, and Advanced at $340/month. Return Prime has a free-to-install tier, and ReturnGO starts at $147/month. The methodology below gives the separate check dates; confirm current terms before buying.

This comparison focuses on facts a merchant can verify before booking a demo or installing an app: public price, included return volume, workflow controls, label model, and platform fit. Public price is not the same as total cost. Label charges, overage rates, add-ons, carrier contracts, and retained-value incentives can change the economic result.

Return platform comparison at a glance

Platform Public starting price Public allowance or billing grain Useful distinction
AfterShip Returns Essentials $19/month or $192/year Monthly offer: 20 returns/month; $0.50 per extra return Confirm monthly versus annual billing and allowance reset
ClickPostQuote requiredConfirm return volume, billing period and modules in the quotePublished portal, exchange and policy workflows; verify the plan
Forthroute No software subscription No monthly return limit; optional brokered labels billed separately Shopify-only workflow with merchant-issued refunds
Happy Returns Contact vendor No current public software price on the source reviewed Physical, box-free and label-free Return Bar network
Loop Checkout+: free software plus return shipping Essential $155/month; Advanced $340/month; enterprise quote Exchange and workflow features vary by plan
Return Prime Free to install 5 requests included; $0.49 per additional request Low published entry point with request-based tiers
ReturnGO Premium $147/month 110 returns/month; $1.25 per extra return Published Premium and Pro volume tiers

Reading the table: “Free software,” “free to install,” and a paid monthly plan are not equivalent billing units. Compare your expected request volume and shipping arrangement before comparing headline prices.

How we compared these platforms

We included products with a current official product, pricing, or Shopify App Store source that exposed enough information to evaluate the offer. The product comparison was checked on August 17, 2026. The worked cost example and AfterShip billing terms were checked again on September 5, 2026. ClickPost was added from its October 2, 2026 source check and its returns page was rechecked on October 8, 2026. Happy Returns' network description was checked on October 8, 2026. These checks are source reviews, not hands-on product tests. Vendors can change prices after these checks. Platforms appear alphabetically in the overview, profiles and worked cost table; their order is not a ranking.

  • Price: software fee, included volume, and published overage where available.
  • Return intake: whether the product describes a branded or self-service portal.
  • Resolution controls: refunds, exchanges, store credit, and who triggers the refund.
  • Logistics: labels, carrier model, tracking, and whether physical drop-off is central to the offer.
  • Platform fit: whether the reviewed offer is specifically available to Shopify merchants.

This is a feature-and-pricing comparison, not an outcome ranking. We found no page-attributed installation, conversion, revenue, or merchant-outcome dataset that would support declaring one universal winner.

1. AfterShip Returns: choose the billing term explicitly

The AfterShip Shopify listing, checked September 5, 2026, shows Essentials at $19/month or $192/year ($16/month equivalent), and Premium at $119/month or $1,188/year ($99/month equivalent).

The monthly offers include 20 returns with Essentials and 100 with Premium, with respective overages of $0.50 and $1 per return. AfterShip's website displays annual allowances. Confirm the allowance and reset date for your chosen billing term.

Essentials covers the branded portal and core approval, refund, exchange and label workflows. Premium adds advanced workflows, integrations and fraud controls. Return Care is a separate shopper-funded model.

Evaluate AfterShip when: its workflow fits your operation. Compare recurring costs after promotions; a monthly equivalent of an annual payment is not a monthly contract.

2. ClickPost: quote-based returns and post-purchase software

ClickPost's returns product describes a branded self-service portal, exchange workflows, configurable return policies and reverse-shipment tracking. Its published features include customer segments with different return policies.

Pricing: quote required. The returns page says pricing depends on return volume and selected modules. Request a returns-specific quote covering the features you need, the billing period, usage charges and any separate label or carrier costs. Public information does not establish a comparable software charge for 100 or 300 returns.

Evaluate ClickPost when: you need to compare its policy and exchange workflows with the other products here. Confirm the Shopify implementation and feature allocation in the proposed plan. No lower total cost or performance advantage is established by quote-based pricing.

ClickPost entry checked October 2, 2026 against its published returns and pricing pages; its returns page was rechecked October 8, 2026. Other entries retain their individual check dates.

3. Forthroute: no software subscription

Forthroute pricing separates software access from optional shipping-label costs. The software has no subscription and no monthly return limit.

If a merchant uses Forthroute-brokered prepaid labels, each label is billed through Shopify at carrier cost plus a 1% handling markup, rounded up to the next $0.10. A merchant can instead connect its own carrier account. For India returns using a merchant's own Shiprocket account, shipping is paid through that account or wallet. Forthroute separately charges US$0.10 through Shopify when an AWB/tracking number or return label is successfully generated. There is no connection fee; billing approval alone does not create a charge. An AWB can succeed even when its PDF is unavailable. Connecting the account confirms login, not the full return lifecycle. Check the current Forthroute billing terms and test a return with support before relying on the connection.

Forthroute is a Shopify returns-management app with a branded customer portal, rule-based approval, exchanges, store credit, printerless QR labels for eligible UK Evri ParcelShop returns, and return-leg tracking. Refund remains the default resolution in the portal. Forthroute supports exchanges and incentives, but it is not an exchange-first product.

The refund boundary matters: approval rules can set an eligible request to approved, but Forthroute does not issue the refund automatically. The merchant initiates the refund. Forthroute also does not supply a warehouse drop-off network or physical return centers.

Evaluate Forthroute when: you run Shopify, want to avoid a software subscription or monthly return cap, and are comfortable with merchant-controlled refunds. Check the Forthroute Shopify listing before installing.

4. Happy Returns: a physical Return Bar model

Happy Returns is structurally different from a software-only returns portal. Its Return & Exchange Portal page, checked October 8, 2026, describes box-free, label-free drop-off at a network of nearly 10,000 Return Bar locations. This is the vendor's published network description, not an independently counted network. The earlier UPS description of Happy Returns refers to nearly 8,000 locations in the United States; check current coverage for your customers before choosing.

UPS announced its acquisition of Happy Returns in 2023.

We did not find a current public price on the primary source reviewed, so this comparison records the price as “contact vendor” rather than carrying forward an old third-party figure.

Evaluate Happy Returns when: a physical, box-free and label-free drop-off network is central to your customer experience. Ask for the exact software, processing, geographic, and shipping terms in the quote.

5. Loop: multiple software and workflow tiers

Loop's official pricing page listed three public plan levels when checked. Checkout+ was described as free software plus return shipping and included returns software, domestic labels in the United States and Canada, Return Bars, and advanced features.

Because return shipping remains part of the model, the word “free” should not be read as zero total return cost.

Essential was listed at $155/month. Its published features included unlimited destinations, automated return policies, carrier-rate shopping, and workflows. Advanced was listed at $340/month and added Shop Now, Instant Exchange, Bonus Credit, and fraud-prevention features. Enterprise pricing required contact with Loop.

Evaluate Loop when: you want to compare plan-gated exchange, workflow, and fraud controls and can model the software and return-shipping components together. Confirm which features are included in your proposed contract rather than assuming every named feature is in the entry plan.

6. Return Prime: request-based entry tiers

The Return Prime Shopify App Store listing showed a free-to-install tier with five return requests included and $0.49 per additional request. Grow was $19.99/month for 60 requests, with $0.49 per extra request and a 15-day trial.

The same listing showed Thrive AI at $79.99/month for 180 requests, with $0.79 per extra request, and Scale at $149.99/month for 450 or more requests, with $0.49 per extra request. Both paid tiers displayed a 15-day trial. The listing described a return portal, exchanges, approval workflows, and return labels; the exact feature allocation depends on tier.

Evaluate Return Prime when: your first comparison is a low-volume, request-priced Shopify plan. Model what happens after the included allowance because the additional-request price differs between tiers.

7. ReturnGO: published Premium and Pro plans

ReturnGO's official pricing page listed Premium at $147/month and Pro at $297/month, with Enterprise available by quote. Its Shopify App Store listing provided the volume grain: Premium included 110 returns per month with a $1.25 overage, while Pro included 300 returns per month with a $0.90 overage.

Both displayed a 14-day trial.

The public Premium feature list included a return portal, variant and product exchanges, refunds, gift cards, store credit, request-approval automation, Shop Now, and shipping integrations. Pro added capabilities such as advanced automation, item validation, packing slips, unlimited languages, ERP connections, automatic completion rules, and API or webhook access.

Evaluate ReturnGO when: you can place expected monthly return volume into a published Premium or Pro allowance and need to compare the additional Pro controls with the price difference.

Why Return Genie and ReturnMagic are not ranked here

The previous version of this page presented Return Genie and ReturnMagic as two of its five leading choices. We could not verify a current official pricing or active Shopify App Store source for either product during this refresh.

They are therefore not ranked as current recommendations. This is an evidence boundary, not a claim that no similarly named product or historical documentation exists.

What do 100 or 300 returns cost on the same billing basis?

Worked example, checked September 5, 2026: assume one billable request per return and either 100 or 300 requests within one monthly allowance period. Use recurring monthly prices, exclude introductory promotions, and keep the selected plan unchanged. The Shopify listings state that recurring and usage charges are billed every 30 days; do not multiply these examples by twelve and call the result a calendar-year quote.

The amounts below cover software and published usage overage only. They exclude labels, taxes, add-ons, implementation, staff time, inspection, and the cost of the refund or replacement itself. These plans have different features; matching volume does not make them interchangeable.

Illustrative software charge in USD for one allowance period
Selected planCalculation100 returns300 returns
AfterShip Essentials$19 + $0.50 for each return above 20$59$159
ClickPostQuote required for the same volume, billing period and modulesQuote requiredQuote required
ForthrouteNo software subscription or monthly return cap$0$0
Return Prime Grow$19.99 + $0.49 for each request above 60$39.59$137.59
ReturnGO Premium$147 + $1.25 for each return above 110$147$384.50

For example, Return Prime Grow at 100 requests is $19.99 + (100 − 60) × $0.49 = $39.59. At 300 returns, ReturnGO Pro's listed $297 with 300 included is less than keeping Premium and paying $384.50. Recheck plan choice when volume changes; a fixed-plan example is not a claim to have found every vendor's lowest available quote.

Loop lists Essential from $155/month and Checkout+ as free software plus return shipping. Its public page does not give enough terms to calculate the full bill for these scenarios. Request a quote for the same return count and shipping mix. Do the same for Happy Returns, including physical processing and drop-off coverage.

Add labels and operating work before choosing

A return request does not necessarily create a paid label. Suppose 50 of the 100 requests need a Forthroute-brokered label, and each carrier rate is a hypothetical $6.76. Applying the published 1% markup and rounding each label up to the next $0.10 gives $6.90 per label, or $345 for 50 labels, alongside $0 software. This is arithmetic using an assumed carrier rate, not a shipping quote or a rate available for every route. An own-carrier arrangement must use that carrier's actual charges instead.

Request comparable label quotes using the same origin, destination, package weight and dimensions. Record who pays: the merchant, the shopper through a return fee, or a shopper-funded protection program. A cost passed to the shopper still affects the offer they receive.

Then run a real workflow test: approve a request, offer the required resolution, create the appropriate label, receive the item, and issue the refund or exchange. In Forthroute, approval can follow rules but the merchant initiates the refund. Include that work in the comparison. Pay for a higher tier when a required workflow or integration justifies it; do not infer labor savings or retained revenue from the subscription price.

How to choose without being misled by the starting price

  1. Use one volume estimate. Put the same expected monthly and annual return count into every plan.
  2. Separate software from shipping. Record subscription, overage, label, carrier, processing, and add-on costs in different columns.
  3. Map your approval and refund owner. Decide what may be automatically approved and what must remain a merchant action.
  4. List required resolutions. Confirm refunds, exchanges, store credit, gift cards, and any exchange incentive you actually intend to use.
  5. Check the logistics model. A carrier-label workflow and a physical drop-off network solve different problems.
  6. Verify the final quote. Public pages are a screening tool. Your signed plan, allowance, and add-ons determine the actual contract.

If your search is specifically limited to Shopify apps, continue with our Shopify return-management systems guide. It has a distinct role from this pricing comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest return-management platform?

There is no defensible answer from starting price alone. Forthroute has no software subscription or monthly return limit, but optional brokered labels have a carrier charge plus markup. Loop's Checkout+ combines free software with return shipping. Return Prime starts free to install but includes five requests before overage. Compare all costs at your expected volume.

Which platform has the lowest published paid plan?

AfterShip Essentials is listed at $19/month, or $192/year ($16/month equivalent). Return Prime Grow starts at $19.99/month. Compare billing commitments, included volume and overages before choosing; neither starting price establishes the lowest total cost.

Does Forthroute refund customers automatically?

No. Forthroute approval rules can approve eligible return requests, but refunds are merchant-issued. Approval and refund execution are separate steps.

Which option includes physical drop-off locations?

Happy Returns is the option in this comparison centered on a physical Return Bar network. Forthroute does not operate warehouses, return centers, or a physical drop-off network.

How current are these prices?

The broader product comparison was checked on August 17, 2026. The worked cost example and AfterShip billing terms were checked again on September 5, 2026. ClickPost was checked on October 2, 2026 and its returns page was rechecked on October 8, 2026. Happy Returns' network description was checked on October 8, 2026. These dates describe source reviews, not hands-on product tests. Confirm current vendor terms, billing periods and the final quote before buying.

Choose the model that fits your returns workflow

Start with the billing grain and the work your team needs to perform. A software subscription, usage charge, shipping label and physical drop-off service cover different parts of a return.

Shortlist the platforms that support your required resolutions, refund responsibilities and logistics model, then price each at the same volume. The dated public prices and worked examples help you screen options; a complete quote and a workflow test establish whether an option fits your store.
